Tamale Pie

Ingredients

  • 250 g or 1/21/2 g Lean ground beef
  • 250 g or 1/21/2 g Lean ground turkey
  • 1 Medium onion chopped
  • 1 Small green pepper chopped
  • 1 Clove garlic minced
  • 1 Can (398 ml/14 oz) stewed tomatoes
  • 10 ml or 22 ml Chili powder
  • 2 ml or 1/21/2 ml Salt
  • 1 ml or 1/41/4 ml Pepper
  • 500 ml or 22 ml Kellogg's Corn Flakes* cereal
  • 125 ml or 1/21/2 ml Kellogg's Corn Flake Crumbs*
  • 175 ml or 3/43/4 ml All-purpose flour
  • 1 ml or 1/41/4 ml Salt
  • 1 Egg
  • 125 ml or 1/21/2 ml Skim milk
  • 30 ml or 22 ml Margarine softened
  • 30 ml or 22 ml Chopped ripe olives (optional)
  • 10 ml or 2 tsp Baking Powder

Directions

1. In large skillet, cook beef, turkey, onion, green pepper and garlic until meat is browned and vegetables are tender; drain. Stir in tomatoes, chili powder, 2 ml (1/2 tsp) salt and pepper. Pour into 2 L (8 cup) casserole dish. Set aside.

2. Combine crushed cereal or crumbs, flour, baking powder and remaining salt. Set aside.

3. In large bowl, combine egg, milk, margarine and olives (if using). Mix well. Add cereal mixture, stirring briskly until well combined. Spread evenly over beef mixture.

4. Bake at 180°C (350°F) 40-45 minutes or until lightly browned.
